CVE-2026-72176
Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's mm/damon/sysfs-schemes component, which could lead to a denial of service or system instability. This vulnerability is caused by an incorrect error handling path in the damon_sysfs_scheme_add_dirs() function, resulting in a resource leak and the dereference of uninitialized memory.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation is restricted to local access and requires specific internal memory allocation failures to trigger kernel instability. The Data Access Monitoring (DAMON) framework sysfs interface is not utilized by default and typically requires administrative access to configure monitoring schemes. Because unprivileged remote attackers cannot reach this interface and triggering the fault requires an uncommon internal allocation failure, the overall impact is confined to a local denial of service.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
