CVE-2026-64860

Description

A flaw was found in the mdns component. This flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker on the same local network to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by sending specially crafted multicast DNS (mDNS) packets. Because the component parses domain name compression pointers recursively without enforcing a depth limit, processing these packets exhausts system memory and forces the device into a continuous crash and reboot loop.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate because exploitation is restricted to adjacent network attackers and results solely in a denial of service without compromising system confidentiality or integrity. Red Hat products do not distribute the ESP-IDF or ESP-Protocols embedded software libraries, as they are designed specifically for microcontroller environments. Consequently, standard Red Hat enterprise deployments are not exposed to this issue.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU); DoS: Resource Consumption (Memory); DoS: Resource Consumption (Other)

When allocating resources without limits, an attacker could prevent other systems, applications, or processes from accessing the same type of resource. It can be easy for an attacker to consume many resources by rapidly making many requests or causing larger resources to be used than is needed.
