CVE-2026-63626

Description

A flaw was found in Mongoose. An unauthenticated adjacent attacker can exploit this issue by sending a specially crafted Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) packet containing an oversized length field during IPv6 Control Protocol (IPv6CP) negotiation. This lack of bounds validation causes out-of-bounds memory read and write operations, which can lead to memory corruption, sensitive information disclosure, or a denial of service (DoS).

Statement

Red Hat rates the severity of this flaw as Important because an unauthenticated adjacent attacker can trigger memory corruption, data leakage, or service crashes with no privileges required. The vulnerability is restricted to adjacent network peers where Mongoose is explicitly configured to manage point-to-point connections with its integrated IPv6 stack. Supported Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments do not deploy or utilize this embedded networking feature.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity,Confidentiality,Availability

Technical Impact: Read Memory; Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

When the length value exceeds the size of the destination, an out-of-bounds read or write could occur. Buffer overflows often can be used to execute arbitrary code, which is usually outside the scope of a program's implicit security policy. This can often be used to subvert any other security service.

Availability

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart; DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU)

Buffer overflows generally lead to crashes. Other attacks leading to lack of availability are possible, including putting the program into an infinite loop.
