CVE-2026-57199
Description
A flaw was found in Asterisk. An attacker can trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) or memory corruption by supplying crafted Short Message Service (SMS) data to an affected system configured with the SMS dialplan application. This issue occurs because incoming message lengths are copied into fixed internal buffers without adequate bounds checking, causing the application to crash.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because triggering the flaw requires specific, non-default dialplan configurations where calls are explicitly routed through the analog messaging facility without input sanitization. Red Hat Enterprise Linux and supported product portfolios do not distribute Asterisk packages, leaving standard enterprise environments unexposed. In environments where Asterisk is independently deployed, the impact is confined to daemon instability or denial of service.
Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Integrity,Confidentiality,Availability
Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
Buffer overflows often can be used to execute arbitrary code, which is usually outside the scope of the product's implicit security policy. This can often be used to subvert any other security service.
Availability
Technical Impact: Modify Memory; DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart; DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU)
Buffer overflows generally lead to crashes. Other attacks leading to lack of availability are possible, including putting the product into an infinite loop.
