CVE-2026-57188
Description
A flaw was found in Asterisk. This vulnerability allows an authenticated remote attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by sending specially crafted network packets to the res_xmpp module. When processing Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) namespace prefixes from a local or federated account, a stack-based buffer overflow is triggered, causing the application to crash.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Moderate impact because exploitation is limited to a denial of service and requires an attacker to possess valid credentials on a local or federated XMPP server. While the memory corruption leads to an application termination, it cannot be initiated by an unauthenticated attacker. In deployments where the res_xmpp module is not loaded or configured, Asterisk instances remain unaffected by this defect.
Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Integrity
Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
Write operations could cause memory corruption. In some cases, an adversary can modify control data such as return addresses in order to execute unexpected code.
Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart
Attempting to access out-of-range, invalid, or unauthorized memory could cause the product to crash.
Other
Technical Impact: Unexpected State
Subsequent write operations can produce undefined or unexpected results.
