CVE-2026-55686
Description
A flaw was found in Podman. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by running a malicious container image where the WORKDIR (working directory) path contains a symbolic link (symlink). This can lead to the creation of a directory or modification of ownership on the host filesystem, potentially impacting system integrity.
Statement
A flaw was found in Podman where running a malicious container image with a WORKDIR path containing a symlink can create directories or modify ownership on the host filesystem. Exploitation requires the user to pull and run a specifically crafted malicious container image. Red Hat rates this as Moderate impact, consistent with the upstream assessment, because the attack requires a malicious image and the most severe outcome (ownership modification) requires additional help from an underprivileged user namespace.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Confidentiality,Integrity,Access Control
Technical Impact: Read Files or Directories; Modify Files or Directories; Bypass Protection Mechanism
An attacker may be able to traverse the file system to unintended locations and read or overwrite the contents of unexpected files. If the files are used for a security mechanism then an attacker may be able to bypass the mechanism.
Other
Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
Windows simple shortcuts, sometimes referred to as soft links, can be exploited remotely since a ".LNK" file can be uploaded like a normal file. This can enable remote execution.
