CVE-2026-55246
Description
A flaw was found in bincookie. When parsing a binary cookies file, the library fails to properly validate internal page counts and offsets against the allocated memory buffer. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by tricking an application into parsing a specially crafted file, triggering out-of-bounds memory reads and writes. Successful exploitation may lead to arbitrary code execution, heap memory corruption, or a Denial of Service (DoS) caused by an application crash.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as an Important impact because heap-based memory corruption can allow arbitrary code execution or cause a denial of service, though it requires local user interaction to process an untrusted file. The affected library is not shipped by default across Red Hat Enterprise Linux or related enterprise platforms, minimizing the attack surface in standard deployments. Consequently, exposure is confined to environments where custom or third-party software incorporates this parser to handle unvalidated external data.
Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Integrity
Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
Write operations could cause memory corruption. In some cases, an adversary can modify control data such as return addresses in order to execute unexpected code.
Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart
Attempting to access out-of-range, invalid, or unauthorized memory could cause the product to crash.
Other
Technical Impact: Unexpected State
Subsequent write operations can produce undefined or unexpected results.
