CVE-2026-53373
Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's memory management (mm/vma) component. When the mmap_prepare() hook is invoked from an mmap() operation, it can attempt to unmap a Virtual Memory Area (VMA) that is not fully established and already detached. This problematic behavior can lead to a warning in vma_mark_detached() and potentially cause system instability or unexpected behavior.
Statement
This vulnerability is evaluated as having a Moderate severity impact because triggering the defect requires local authenticated access and specifically induced failure handling in stacked driver mappings, restricting the consequences to system denial of service. The affected kernel memory management functionality was introduced in newer upstream releases and is not present in supported Red Hat Enterprise Linux kernels. As a result, standard Red Hat enterprise environments are not exposed to this flaw.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
