CVE-2026-52295

Description

A flaw was found in FFmpeg. This buffer overflow vulnerability allows an attacker to cause a denial of service. The flaw occurs when processing data through the libavformat/iamf_writer.c component.

Statement

This vulnerability affects FFmpeg versions 7.0 through 8.x. The buffer overflow occurs in the IAMF (Immersive Audio Model and Formats) writer component (libavformat/iamf_writer.c), which was introduced in FFmpeg 7.0 in November 2023. FFmpeg versions before 7.0 do not contain IAMF support and are not affected by this vulnerability. The issue was fixed in FFmpeg 9.0.

Red Hat products shipping FFmpeg versions before 7.0 are not affected. Community products (Fedora, EPEL) shipping FFmpeg 7.1.5 are affected and require updates.

Mitigation

Update to FFmpeg 9.0 or later. If updating is not possible, avoid processing untrusted IAMF (Immersive Audio Model and Formats) input files.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Red Hat CVSS v3 Score Explanation

Heap buffer overflow in IAMF writer causing denial of service. Local attack vector (requires processing local file). No privileges or user interaction required. High availability impact (crash).

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity,Confidentiality,Availability

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Buffer overflows often can be used to execute arbitrary code, which is usually outside the scope of the product's implicit security policy. This can often be used to subvert any other security service.

Availability

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart; DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU)

Buffer overflows generally lead to crashes. Other attacks leading to lack of availability are possible, including putting the product into an infinite loop.
