CVE-2026-46472

Description

A flaw was found in gstreamer1-plugins-good. When processing a crafted MP4 media file, the isomp4 plugin's qtdemux_parse_chnl function can read past the boundary of a global array. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by enticing a user or service to process a specially crafted file, potentially leading to unauthorized information disclosure.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Low severity because successful exploitation requires user interaction to open a malicious media file and only results in an out-of-bounds read of adjacent memory, without causing system crashes or enabling arbitrary code execution. In Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, GStreamer plugins are typically invoked by interactive desktop applications or local media pipelines rather than unauthenticated network services. Consequently, exposure is limited to local or user-assisted contexts where an attacker must trick an individual into processing an untrusted video file.

Mitigation

On systems where multimedia playback and demuxing are not required, remove the package to eliminate exposure:

# dnf remove gstreamer1-plugins-good

Caveat: Removing gstreamer1-plugins-good may uninstall dependent graphical desktop packages (such as GNOME components) or break media playback in applications relying on the GStreamer framework. Headless server environments remain fully functional via terminal access.

For systems that must parse media files, do not open untrusted MP4 files and isolate media handling pipelines within unprivileged containers or sandboxes.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Confidentiality

Technical Impact: Read Memory

An attacker could get secret values such as cryptographic keys, PII, memory addresses, or other information that could be used in additional attacks.

Confidentiality

Technical Impact: Bypass Protection Mechanism

Out-of-bounds memory could contain memory addresses or other information that can be used to bypass ASLR and other protection mechanisms in order to improve the reliability of exploiting a separate weakness for code execution.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

An attacker could cause a segmentation fault or crash by causing memory to be read outside of the bounds of the buffer. This is especially likely when the code reads a variable amount of data and assumes that a sentinel exists to stop the read operation, such as a NUL in a string.

Other

Technical Impact: Varies by Context

The read operation could produce other undefined or unexpected results.
