CVE-2026-42771

Description

A flaw was found in OpenSSL. When an application uses the X509_VERIFY_PARAM_set1_email() function to validate a specially crafted S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) email address, an out-of-bounds read can occur. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a malicious email, leading to an application crash and a Denial of Service (DoS). This issue does not directly expose sensitive data.

Statement

This flaw is rated as Low impact. A possible out-of-bounds read in OpenSSL's X509_VERIFY_PARAM_set1_email() function can occur when an application validates a specially crafted S/MIME email address. This could lead to a denial of service through an application crash, but does not directly exfiltrate data.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity,Confidentiality,Availability

Technical Impact: Read Memory; Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Buffer overflows often can be used to execute arbitrary code, which is usually outside the scope of a program's implicit security policy. This can often be used to subvert any other security service.

Availability

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart; DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU)

Buffer overflows generally lead to crashes. Other attacks leading to lack of availability are possible, including putting the program into an infinite loop.
