CVE-2026-42582
Description
A flaw was found in Netty, an asynchronous, event-driven network application framework. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted compressed field section during header block decoding. This flaw occurs because the system allocates a new byte array based on a provided length without verifying if enough bytes are present in the compressed data. This can lead to excessive memory allocation, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) for the affected system.
Statement
This is an Important denial of service vulnerability in Netty's HTTP/3 QPACK decoder. A remote attacker can trigger excessive memory allocation by sending a malformed HTTP/3 header, leading to resource exhaustion. This is particularly impactful in environments where Netty-based applications handle untrusted network traffic, as it can disrupt service availability without requiring authentication or complex attack prerequisites.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
