CVE-2026-42266

Description

A flaw was found in JupyterLab, an extensible environment for interactive computing. The PyPI Extension Manager, responsible for installing extensions, failed to properly enforce its allow-list of approved extensions. This vulnerability allowed for the installation of unauthorized extensions from sources outside the default PyPI index. Exploitation of this flaw could lead to arbitrary code execution and significant system compromise.

Statement

This Important flaw in JupyterLab, as utilized in Red Hat OpenShift AI and Migration Toolkit for Applications, stems from the PyPI Extension Manager's failure to enforce its extension allow-list. This enables the installation of unauthorized extensions from external sources, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution and significant system compromise within the JupyterLab environment.

Mitigation

Upgrade JupyterLab to version 4.5.7 or later.

Set the JupyterLab extension manager to read-only mode to prevent users from installing unauthorized extensions. Note: configuring a PyPI proxy with an allow list of packages is not sufficient to protect against this vulnerability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
