CVE-2026-122054
Description
A flaw was found in glibc. When converting crafted text using the BIG-HKSCS character set, such as through the iconv library function, the conversion routine can fail to advance and enter an infinite loop. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by submitting malicious input to an application that processes this encoding, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) as the application hangs indefinitely.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact because exploitation is constrained to a denial of service, where affected processes enter an unresponsive state without risking arbitrary code execution or data compromise. In standard Red Hat enterprise environments, overall risk is limited as the BIG-HKSCS character set is a specialized encoding that is not used in default configurations or common network workflows. To trigger the condition, a service must explicitly be exposed to untrusted external data and configured to translate text using this specific character map.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU); DoS: Resource Consumption (Memory); DoS: Amplification
An infinite loop will cause unexpected consumption of resources, such as CPU cycles or memory. The software's operation may slow down, or cause a long time to respond.
