CVE-2026-121750

Description

A flaw was found in Node Version Manager (nvm). When downloading release archives, nvm stores the file directly in the local cache before performing checksum verification, leaving rejected archives in place when a checksum mismatch occurs. If a user subsequently attempts an offline installation for that version, nvm installs and runs binaries from the unverified cached archive without re-validating it. An attacker capable of tampering with downloaded archives could exploit this behavior to achieve arbitrary code execution on the victim's system.

Statement

This vulnerability is evaluated as having a Low impact because successful exploitation requires multiple non-standard prerequisites and direct user interaction. An attacker must manipulate an archive in transit without modifying the accompanying digest file, followed by a user explicitly initiating an offline installation command despite receiving an explicit checksum mismatch warning. Furthermore, Node Version Manager is a client-side developer utility rather than an enterprise service shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, limiting the potential exposure in Red Hat environments.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity,Availability,Confidentiality,Other

Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands; Alter Execution Logic; Other

An attacker can execute malicious code by compromising the host server, performing DNS spoofing, or modifying the code in transit. Executing untrusted code could compromise the control flow of the program. The untrusted code could execute attacker-controlled commands, read or modify sensitive resources, or prevent the software from functioning correctly for legitimate users.
