CVE-2026-121747
Description
A flaw was found in Node Version Manager (nvm). This flaw allows information disclosure when processing a repository or archive containing a configuration file (.nvmrc) that is a symbolic link pointing to sensitive files on the system. When a user or automated continuous integration (CI) build system executes nvm commands in that directory, nvm follows the link and prints the target file contents into terminal output or logs. An attacker can exploit this behavior to expose sensitive local data, such as credentials or environment variables, in shared logs.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact because exploitation requires local user interaction to execute commands within an untrusted repository, limiting the blast radius to unauthorized local read access of sensitive files printed to logs or terminal sessions. Node Version Manager (nvm) is not packaged or distributed in Red Hat enterprise products, meaning default installations and production environments are unaffected. Risk is restricted to developer environments or CI/CD pipelines where third-party nvm installations are manually integrated and configured to inspect untrusted source trees.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Confidentiality,Integrity,Access Control
Technical Impact: Read Files or Directories; Modify Files or Directories; Bypass Protection Mechanism
An attacker may be able to traverse the file system to unintended locations and read or overwrite the contents of unexpected files. If the files are used for a security mechanism then an attacker may be able to bypass the mechanism.
Other
Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
Windows simple shortcuts, sometimes referred to as soft links, can be exploited remotely since a ".LNK" file can be uploaded like a normal file. This can enable remote execution.
