CVE-2026-120454
説明
A flaw was found in sleuthkit. An attacker can cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by providing a specially crafted HFS+ filesystem image with an excessively large uncompressed attribute size. When sleuthkit attempts to decompress the data, a memory allocation failure triggers a null pointer dereference, causing the application to crash.
詳細
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because successful exploitation requires an investigator or automated pipeline to process an untrusted HFS+ disk image, with the impact confined strictly to an application crash. Sleuthkit operates primarily as an on-demand forensic command-line utility and analysis library rather than a persistent background service, meaning termination of the process does not compromise system integrity, expose confidential data, or disrupt the host operating system. Environments that do not inspect untrusted HFS+ file systems or disk images remain unaffected.
軽減策
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
脆弱性の原因 (CWE) の理解
Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart
NULL pointer dereferences usually result in the failure of the process unless exception handling (on some platforms) is available and implemented. Even when exception handling is being used, it can still be very difficult to return the software to a safe state of operation.
Integrity,Confidentiality
Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands; Read Memory; Modify Memory
In rare circumstances, when NULL is equivalent to the 0x0 memory address and privileged code can access it, then writing or reading memory is possible, which may lead to code execution.
