CVE-2026-119284
Description
A flaw was found in joserfc. A remote attacker can trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) by submitting specially crafted compact JSON Web Signature (JWS) tokens that exhaust process memory. The library parses and splits input bytes into individual segments before enforcing aggregate size limits, causing excessive memory allocation before rejecting oversized data.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity rather than Important because, while unauthenticated remote actors can trigger transient memory spikes by transmitting large serialized signatures, the impact is limited to availability degradation or process crashes without compromising data integrity or confidentiality. In Red Hat environments, the affected library is utilized internally by containerized services and management components to handle cryptographic validation of incoming tokens. Exploitation requires the target service endpoint to accept untrusted compact token inputs directly, and the resulting disruption is confined to the specific worker process handling the request rather than compromising host-level controls.
Mitigation
Upgrade joserfc to 1.7.6 or later; as an interim measure, enforce ingress size limits on accepted compact tokens before deserialization.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU); DoS: Resource Consumption (Memory); DoS: Resource Consumption (Other)
When allocating resources without limits, an attacker could prevent other systems, applications, or processes from accessing the same type of resource. It can be easy for an attacker to consume many resources by rapidly making many requests or causing larger resources to be used than is needed.
