CVE-2026-119193

Description

A flaw was found in PHPUnit. On multi-user systems sharing a common temporary directory, the framework reuses a predictable temporary folder during code coverage tests without verifying ownership or permissions. A local attacker can pre-create the directory and substitute test files, leading to arbitrary code execution with the permissions of the user running the tests.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact because successful exploitation requires local unprivileged access and a specific race condition during test execution on a shared multi-user system. Red Hat enterprise products do not ship or support the affected PHPUnit testing framework, meaning default platform installations are not exposed. Exploitation is constrained to developer workstations or shared build environments where multiple unprivileged users have write access to the same temporary directory while coverage tests are executing.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Confidentiality

Technical Impact: Read Application Data

On some operating systems, the fact that the temporary file exists may be apparent to any user with sufficient privileges to access that directory. Since the file is visible, the application that is using the temporary file could be known. If one has access to list the processes on the system, the attacker has gained information about what the user is doing at that time. By correlating this with the applications the user is running, an attacker could potentially discover what a user's actions are. From this, higher levels of security could be breached.
