CVE-2026-119051

Description

A flaw was found in flat. A remote attacker could trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) by submitting specially crafted input containing excessively large numeric keys to the unflatten function. This causes the library to allocate massive sparse arrays, exhausting system resources and blocking the application from processing tasks.

Statement

Red Hat has evaluated this vulnerability as Moderate severity because successful exploitation requires an application to pass untrusted user-controlled keys into the unflatten utility without proper validation or sanitization. Although processing malicious inputs with excessively large array indexes can stall the event loop or exhaust memory leading to a denial of service, it does not enable data leakage or arbitrary code execution. Within Red Hat environments, the package is predominantly consumed by internal build tooling or authenticated administrative web interfaces, significantly limiting exposure to direct external manipulation.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU); DoS: Resource Consumption (Memory); DoS: Resource Consumption (Other)

When allocating resources without limits, an attacker could prevent other systems, applications, or processes from accessing the same type of resource. It can be easy for an attacker to consume many resources by rapidly making many requests or causing larger resources to be used than is needed.
