CVE-2026-118777

Description

A flaw was found in node-forge. The HTTP client improperly validates cookie names and paths from server responses, allowing a malicious server to inject or delete attributes on shared JavaScript objects. By returning specially crafted HTTP response cookies, an attacker can trigger prototype pollution (the unauthorized modification of base object properties). This issue can result in a Denial of Service (DoS) or application manipulation by corrupting runtime logic.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because successful exploitation requires an application to actively connect to a malicious or compromised web server using the optional client networking modules. In typical Red Hat environments, node-forge is utilized primarily for cryptographic and certificate handling routines rather than the standalone HTTP or XHR transport clients, which are not imported by default. Consequently, most deployments remain unaffected, and any potential prototype pollution or denial-of-service condition is strictly confined to processes explicitly receiving untrusted response headers.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
