CVE-2026-118590

Description

A flaw was found in nibabel. The header processing logic in the array_from_file function does not properly restrict memory allocation when handling input data. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by submitting a specially crafted file to trigger excessive memory consumption, leading to a Denial of Service (DoS).

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity for Red Hat because exploitation is limited to a denial of service through memory exhaustion, requiring an application to parse an untrusted or maliciously crafted neuroimaging file. While excessive memory consumption can terminate the processing application or cause resource starvation on the host, the flaw does not allow remote code execution or unauthorized data modification. Furthermore, nibabel is a specialized scientific library not deployed as part of core enterprise services, confining the blast radius to workflows that ingest unvalidated user files.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU); DoS: Resource Consumption (Memory); DoS: Resource Consumption (Other)

When allocating resources without limits, an attacker could prevent other systems, applications, or processes from accessing the same type of resource. It can be easy for an attacker to consume many resources by rapidly making many requests or causing larger resources to be used than is needed.
