CVE-2026-118581

Description

A flaw was found in the MongoDB Java Driver. The BSON (Binary JSON) encoding component fails to verify that an externally supplied raw document's declared length matches its actual byte range before copying it into an outgoing database command. A remote attacker can exploit this flaw by submitting crafted input through an application that wraps the raw document into database operations, causing trailing data to be interpreted as additional command fields. This issue allows attackers to alter database commands and potentially read or modify data under the application's credentials.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because exploitation requires an application to construct database requests using untrusted, raw BSON byte arrays without prior validation. In standard deployments of Red Hat products embedding the MongoDB Java driver, applications typically use structured document builders or object mappers rather than directly splicing unvalidated raw byte streams into commands. While successful manipulation could permit unauthorized data retrieval or modification within the application's database permissions, typical architectural patterns limit direct exposure.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
