CVE-2026-117688

Description

A flaw was found in the client registration component of Keycloak, an open-source identity and access management solution. When a vault provider is used to store sensitive information, an authenticated client owner can use a specially crafted reference to trick the system into revealing secrets. By updating a client secret to point to a vault entry and then requesting the client configuration, the owner can see the secret value in plain text. This could lead to the exposure of sensitive credentials that the user should not be able to access.

Statement

The Red Hat Product Security team has assessed the severity of this vulnerability as Moderate, given that exploitation requires the attacker to already possess a valid Registration Access Token and have prior knowledge of Vault aliases. Successful exploitation allows an attacker to read sensitive secrets stored in the Vault in plaintext. The vulnerability's root cause is the improper resolution of Vault expressions within the client registration installation configuration response.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
