CVE-2026-117615

Description

A flaw was found in Jenkins. An attacker with item creation and configuration permissions can read arbitrary files from the controller file system, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. This vulnerability occurs because Jenkins improperly follows symbolic links (file shortcuts) when copying an item's directory during a rename operation.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity for Red Hat deployments because exploitation requires an authenticated user with explicit item management privileges, preventing unauthenticated remote abuse. In supported Jenkins installations, item rename actions that traverse symbolic links can allow authorized users to expose sensitive files from the controller host filesystem. Because exploitation is constrained to internal users who already have project administrative access, the overall risk to the host environment is bounded.

Mitigation

Upgrade Jenkins to weekly 2.588 or LTS 2.580.2 (the fix stops copying the directory of an item being renamed if it contains symbolic links); restrict Item/Create and Item/Configure permissions in the interim.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Confidentiality,Integrity,Access Control

Technical Impact: Read Files or Directories; Modify Files or Directories; Bypass Protection Mechanism

An attacker may be able to traverse the file system to unintended locations and read or overwrite the contents of unexpected files. If the files are used for a security mechanism then an attacker may be able to bypass the mechanism.

Other

Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Windows simple shortcuts, sometimes referred to as soft links, can be exploited remotely since a ".LNK" file can be uploaded like a normal file. This can enable remote execution.
