CVE-2026-116740

Description

A flaw was found in libcss. A remote attacker could cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by convincing an application or user to parse a specially crafted stylesheet. When the library processes a media query list ending with a trailing comma, an unhandled null pointer dereference occurs, causing the application to crash.

Statement

This flaw is assessed as a Moderate severity impact because triggering it requires user interaction to process untrusted style input, confining the blast radius strictly to client-side denial of service. When an application using libcss ingests CSS rules containing trailing punctuation in media declarations, a null reference triggers an unexpected termination of the consumer process. The issue cannot be leveraged for arbitrary code execution, privilege escalation, or unauthorized data exposure. Additionally, libcss is not distributed in supported Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

NULL pointer dereferences usually result in the failure of the process unless exception handling (on some platforms) is available and implemented. Even when exception handling is being used, it can still be very difficult to return the software to a safe state of operation.

Integrity,Confidentiality

Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands; Read Memory; Modify Memory

In rare circumstances, when NULL is equivalent to the 0x0 memory address and privileged code can access it, then writing or reading memory is possible, which may lead to code execution.
