CVE-2026-116641
Description
A flaw was found in mongo-tools. The application fails to reject connections using certificates issued by distrusted Certificate Authorities (CAs) due to an incomplete internal certificate denylist. A remote attacker in an intercepted network position could exploit this flaw by presenting a fraudulent certificate, enabling them to intercept and alter encrypted Transport Layer Security (TLS) traffic, resulting in information disclosure and data tampering.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Moderate impact because successful exploitation requires an adversary to occupy an active man-in-the-middle network position and present a certificate issued by a specific distrusted Certificate Authority. In Red Hat environments, database utilities compiled against earlier runtime releases lack the updated embedded revocation table, which may permit TLS connections to untrusted endpoints under compromised network conditions. Because the flaw cannot be triggered without intercepting client traffic and requires access to fraudulent certificates from the affected authority, the overall risk remains constrained.
Mitigation
Upgrading the container build to a mongo-tools/DB Tools >= 100.20.0 release (Go 1.27.3 rebuild) or rebuilding with Go >= 1.27.3 resolves the exposure; avoid distrusted-CA certificates.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Technical Impact: Bypass Protection Mechanism; Gain Privileges or Assume Identity
When a certificate is invalid or malicious, it might allow an attacker to spoof a trusted entity by interfering in the communication path between the host and client. The product might connect to a malicious host while believing it is a trusted host, or the product might be deceived into accepting spoofed data that appears to originate from a trusted host.
