CVE-2026-116144

Description

A flaw was found in ImageMagick. An attacker could cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by supplying a specially crafted Magick Vector Graphics (MVG) file. When processed, the file triggers uncontrolled recursion within the MVG decoder, exhausting stack memory and causing the application to crash.

Statement

This vulnerability is evaluated as Low severity because exploitation requires processing an untrusted Magick Vector Graphics file, resulting solely in an application crash without compromising system confidentiality or integrity. In standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, ImageMagick operates as a utility for batch conversions or localized document processing rather than an exposed privileged daemon. The blast radius is therefore confined to the specific process instance executing the conversion, and system stability is recovered immediately upon process exit.

Mitigation

Disable decoding of Magick Vector Graphics files by configuring the ImageMagick security policy.

Add the following directive inside the `<policymap>` section in `/etc/ImageMagick/policy.xml` (or `/etc/ImageMagick-6/policy.xml`):

xml
<policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="MVG" />

Caveats:
Applications and workflows requiring MVG format processing will fail to render these files. If ImageMagick is utilized by background daemons or web servers (such as httpd or php-fpm), restart those services to ensure the policy takes effect.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU); DoS: Resource Consumption (Memory); DoS: Resource Consumption (Other)

When allocating resources without limits, an attacker could prevent other systems, applications, or processes from accessing the same type of resource. It can be easy for an attacker to consume many resources by rapidly making many requests or causing larger resources to be used than is needed.
