CVE-2026-115942
Description
A flaw was found in Apache Qpid Proton. When processing a misconfigured wildcard TLS (Transport Layer Security) certificate that does not comply with standard specifications, the application triggers an out-of-bounds read on the stack. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by presenting a non-compliant certificate during a TLS handshake, leading to an application crash and a denial of service (DoS), or potentially exposing sensitive memory.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated Moderate because successful exploitation requires a non-standard wildcard TLS certificate that does not conform to RFC 9525, limiting exposure in environments using compliant public or private certificate authorities. While an attacker could attempt to trigger an out-of-bounds stack read during TLS negotiation, the primary consequence is an application crash leading to denial of service rather than remote code execution. Under typical Red Hat product deployments, standard validation practices and conformant certificates significantly reduce the likelihood of this condition being encountered.
Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Confidentiality
Technical Impact: Read Memory
An attacker could get secret values such as cryptographic keys, PII, memory addresses, or other information that could be used in additional attacks.
Confidentiality
Technical Impact: Bypass Protection Mechanism
Out-of-bounds memory could contain memory addresses or other information that can be used to bypass ASLR and other protection mechanisms in order to improve the reliability of exploiting a separate weakness for code execution.
Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart
An attacker could cause a segmentation fault or crash by causing memory to be read outside of the bounds of the buffer. This is especially likely when the code reads a variable amount of data and assumes that a sentinel exists to stop the read operation, such as a NUL in a string.
Other
Technical Impact: Varies by Context
The read operation could produce other undefined or unexpected results.
