CVE-2026-115909

Description

A flaw was found in zip. A remote attacker can cause a denial of service (DoS) by supplying a specially crafted ZIP archive. When extracting symbolic link entries, the library attempts to allocate memory based on attacker-controlled size metadata before validating the entry data. Requesting an excessively large allocation causes the process to abort immediately, crashing applications that process untrusted archives.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact for Red Hat products because, while an unhandled allocation failure terminates the running process and results in a denial of service, it cannot be leveraged to execute arbitrary code or compromise system confidentiality and integrity. In Red Hat environments, the affected Rust crate is primarily embedded within specific utilities and containerized tools that process archives. Successful exploitation requires an application or user to unpack a malformed archive containing crafted symlink headers, restricting the blast radius directly to the target extracting process without destabilizing the host system.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU); DoS: Resource Consumption (Memory); DoS: Resource Consumption (Other)

When allocating resources without limits, an attacker could prevent other systems, applications, or processes from accessing the same type of resource. It can be easy for an attacker to consume many resources by rapidly making many requests or causing larger resources to be used than is needed.
