CVE-2026-115455

Description

A flaw was found in GCC libstdc++. When an application extracts data into a bitset from a wide-character stream, internal stack memory allocation fails to properly account for character size and alignment. An attacker capable of supplying crafted input to an affected application could trigger a stack-based buffer overflow leading denial of service (DoS).

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact for Red Hat products because triggering the condition requires an application to extract untrusted wide-character input into a bitset container, an uncommon design pattern in standard enterprise deployments. In typical configurations, applications are only exposed if they specifically process external wide streams using this functionality. Furthermore, Red Hat compiler stack-hardening features generally cause the affected binary to abort upon stack corruption, constraining the risk to a denial of service.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Write operations could cause memory corruption. In some cases, an adversary can modify control data such as return addresses in order to execute unexpected code.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

Attempting to access out-of-range, invalid, or unauthorized memory could cause the product to crash.

Other

Technical Impact: Unexpected State

Subsequent write operations can produce undefined or unexpected results.
