CVE-2026-114145

Description

A flaw was found in GitPython. This vulnerability allows an attacker to achieve arbitrary code execution by supplying an untrusted submodule path. Because the library fails to properly validate destination paths before cloning repository data, an attacker can plant a malicious executable script into sensitive directories, such as the Git hooks folder. Subsequent Git operations then trigger the planted script, executing commands in the context of the running application.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Important because successful exploitation permits arbitrary code execution within the context of the underlying service or container. Although execution of arbitrary commands represents a critical consequence, the rating reflects the high complexity and prerequisites required, specifically that an application must accept user-controlled submodule paths and operate where default Git hook templates are absent. In Red Hat environments, such as Ansible Automation Platform, OpenShift AI, and Red Hat Satellite, impact is limited to workloads configured to process repository structures from untrusted or unauthenticated sources.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
