CVE-2026-114141

Description

A flaw was found in toml. A remote attacker can trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) by supplying a crafted TOML document containing a large number of array-of-tables headers. Processing these unpruned headers causes repetitive path scanning that blocks the event loop, rendering the application unresponsive.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as an Important impact by Red Hat because an unauthenticated remote attacker can monopolize the Node.js event loop through excessive computational overhead, leading to a complete service outage without requiring elevated privileges. In Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the vulnerable parser is included as a bundled dependency in cockpit-image-builder, which processes configuration blueprints for image generation. Although exploitation requires submitting maliciously structured inputs to an endpoint that parses TOML data, successful attacks tie up runtime threads and prevent the application from handling legitimate concurrent requests.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU)

When an attacker can directly invoke the blocking code, or the blocking code can be affected by environmental conditions that can be influenced by an attacker, then this can lead to a denial of service by causing unexpected hang or freeze of the code. An unexpected call to blocking code can trigger an infinite loop, or a large loop that causes the software to pause and wait indefinitely.
