CVE-2026-114140
Description
A flaw was found in nbconvert. This flaw allows an attacker to perform an arbitrary file write by enticing a user to convert a maliciously crafted Jupyter notebook. Due to improper path validation in ExtractOutputPreprocessor, attacker-controlled cell output metadata can traverse outside the target directory, allowing arbitrary files to be created or overwritten with the user's privileges.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as an Important severity flaw because an attacker can achieve arbitrary file creation or modification within the user's environment, potentially leading to local code execution or privilege escalation. In Red Hat OpenShift AI workbench and pipeline environments, nbconvert provides document conversion capabilities for data science workflows. Although exploitation requires social engineering to convince a user to convert an untrusted notebook file, the resulting ability to overwrite sensitive configuration or executable files elevates the severity above Moderate. The blast radius remains limited to the permissions and filesystem access granted to the executing user or container.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
