CVE-2026-113720

Description

A flaw was found in virtualenv. When creating new environments, cached package files retain their original permissions rather than respecting the current user file-creation mask (umask). On shared systems where an environment directory is accessible to other users, a local attacker can modify these package files, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution when the environment owner runs commands.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity rather than Low due to the potential for local arbitrary code execution and privilege escalation between non-root users, but it does not warrant an Important rating because exploitation requires specific non-default preconditions. To exploit this flaw, a local attacker must have traverse and write permissions in the target environment directory, and the victim's virtual environment cache must have been previously created under an overly permissive umask. In standard Red Hat product deployments and automated build environments, default system umasks and isolated user workspace directories prevent unauthorized local accounts from modifying newly seeded virtual environment files.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
