CVE-2026-112944
Description
A flaw was found in launch-editor. This vulnerability can lead to arbitrary command execution or unintended file overwrite due to improper handling of file paths when invoking external text editors. An attacker capable of creating files with leading special characters in the working directory can cause the editor to interpret the filename as a command-line flag rather than a positional file target.
Statement
This vulnerability is evaluated as having a Moderate security impact for Red Hat products because triggering the issue requires local filesystem write access and specific user interaction to open malicious filenames. In standard Red Hat enterprise environments, launch-editor is primarily used during development or debugging workflows rather than running as an exposed, persistent background service. Successful exploitation is further constrained by requiring an affected editor such as Vim or Emacs to be selected when handling untrusted directory entries.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
