CVE-2026-112941

Description

A flaw was found in filelock. The SoftReadWriteLock and AsyncSoftReadWriteLock mechanisms cache an initial directory check but resolve path names again during subsequent record operations. A local attacker can exploit this behavior by replacing the lock directory structure after its initial acquisition to redirect lock-record writes into unintended locations. This vulnerability allows an attacker to modify or corrupt files writable by the process executing the lock.

Statement

Red Hat has evaluated this vulnerability as having a Low impact because exploitation requires pre-existing local access and is constrained to shared multi-user environments where directory structures can be swapped during concurrent locking operations. In typical Red Hat deployments, workloads operate within isolated container boundaries or dedicated user directories, significantly limiting the possibility of unauthorized directory replacement. Furthermore, the issue only affects specialized soft read-write lock implementations rather than standard file locks, restricting the potential blast radius to unauthorized file creation without granting elevated privileges.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
