CVE-2026-112406

Description

A flaw was found in Pillow. This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) through an infinite loop during PDF page processing. When rewriting pages, the parser fails to detect circular references in the page tree hierarchy. By submitting a specially crafted PDF document to an application that modifies or appends images to it, an attacker can exhaust system CPU resources and make the service unresponsive.

Mitigation

Disclaimer: The following mitigation solutions are provided as a courtesy, pending the application of an official patch. This content was generated utilizing AI tools in conjunction with data from https://cmetaxonomy.org. Customers are advised to independently evaluate and test these temporary mitigations within their own infrastructure.

Until patched, this is a concern on applications that modify or append images to supplied PDFs using Pillow, so restrict untrusted PDF submissions to applications that modify or append images, and apply execution timeouts on PDF handling workers. As a compensating measure, impose maximum CPU time limits on worker processes using RLIMIT_CPU via ulimit or prlimit to terminate execution when an infinite loop occurs, detect unresponsiveness in hung worker processes via systemd WatchdogSec heartbeats and automatically restart the service, and constrain maximum CPU quotas for the processing container or service using cgroups v2 to prevent host resource starvation. These controls limit blast radius and contain exploitation, but they do not fix the underlying infinite loop defect — apply the upstream patch to fully remediate.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

An infinite loop will cause unexpected consumption of resources, such as CPU cycles or memory. The software's operation may slow down, or cause a long time to respond.
