CVE-2026-111997

Description

A flaw was found in ip-address. A remote attacker can cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by providing specially crafted input containing excessive percent characters to an application parsing IPv6 addresses. When processed by the Address6 constructor, inefficient parsing logic leads to high CPU consumption and application unresponsiveness.

Statement

This vulnerability is evaluated as having a Moderate impact for Red Hat environments because an unauthenticated remote attacker can cause temporary application unresponsiveness, but the issue cannot lead to unauthorized code execution or data exposure. The underlying regular expression evaluation exhibits quadratic time complexity when handling malformed zone identifiers, synchronously blocking the single-threaded event loop. In supported containerized workloads and services embedding this dependency, exploitation requires an accessible endpoint that feeds large, unvalidated network request bodies into IPv6 address verification logic.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU)

Attackers can create crafted inputs that intentionally cause the regular expression to use excessive backtracking in a way that causes the CPU consumption to spike.
