CVE-2026-110855
Description
A flaw was found in GitPython. This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to cause information disclosure by convincing an application or user to clone and update a repository containing a specially crafted submodule configuration. When handling submodule definitions, GitPython improperly expands environment variables instead of treating the values literally. Consequently, sensitive data such as system secrets or access credentials may be exposed in directory paths and debug logs.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Moderate impact for Red Hat products because exploitation requires an application or automated pipeline to ingest an untrusted Git repository and initialize its submodules, limiting the blast radius to unauthorized information leakage without compromising system integrity or availability. In environments where GitPython is bundled within Red Hat services or containerized tools, sensitive host environment variables could be unintentionally revealed in directory hierarchies or debug output if a malicious repository with specially crafted submodule configurations is processed. Workflows that only operate on trusted, internally managed repositories are not exposed to this risk.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
