CVE-2026-110247

Description

A flaw was found in Thunderbird. A remote attacker could exploit an integer overflow in the libmime library to achieve arbitrary code execution or cause a Denial of Service (DoS). By sending a sufficiently large email message, an attacker causes buffer size arithmetic to overflow without proper checks. This leads to heap memory corruption as subsequent memory copy operations overwrite adjacent heap allocations with attacker-controlled data.

Statement

Red Hat evaluates this vulnerability with an Important severity rating because it presents a risk of remote arbitrary code execution and application crashes within the context of the desktop user. Although the issue can be reached remotely by delivering a specially crafted email message, exploitation requires user interaction to process the message and does not directly compromise the underlying host or grant elevated privileges. Because Thunderbird operates as an interactive end-user client rather than an exposed system service, the immediate impact is bounded to the affected user's session.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Write operations could cause memory corruption. In some cases, an adversary can modify control data such as return addresses in order to execute unexpected code.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

Attempting to access out-of-range, invalid, or unauthorized memory could cause the product to crash.

Other

Technical Impact: Unexpected State

Subsequent write operations can produce undefined or unexpected results.
