CVE-2026-106556
Description
A flaw was found in the Backstage plugin-techdocs-node component. Insufficient validation of documentation configuration files during documentation generation allows sanitization checks to be bypassed. An authenticated user with permission to register or modify documentation sources can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands in the build environment. This may allow an attacker to compromise the build container and access internal resources available to the documentation service.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as an Important impact because authenticated users with permissions to manage documentation entities can bypass MkDocs configuration filters to run arbitrary commands on the build system. While exploitation requires valid credentials and catalog authoring privileges, successful attacks breach intended sandbox boundaries to take control of the execution runtime. Deployments of Red Hat Developer Hub and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform utilizing TechDocs generation are exposed if untrusted users have authorization to register or modify documentation repositories.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands; DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart; Read Files or Directories; Modify Files or Directories; Read Application Data; Modify Application Data; Hide Activities
Attackers could execute unauthorized operating system commands, which could then be used to disable the product, or read and modify data for which the attacker does not have permissions to access directly. Since the targeted application is directly executing the commands instead of the attacker, any malicious activities may appear to come from the application or the application's owner.
