CVE-2026-106503
Description
A flaw was found in the Backstage plugin-scaffolder-backend component. An authorization bypass allows an authenticated user with access to Scaffolder templates to circumvent configured action restrictions. By manipulating action inputs, an attacker can leverage integration credentials to gain unauthorized access to source-control repositories and associated resources.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as an Important severity because authenticated remote users can circumvent execution guardrails defined for backend actions, creating high confidentiality and integrity risks for connected source control management systems. In Red Hat Developer Hub and Ansible Automation Platform environments where software templates are enabled, users with permission to run Scaffolder tasks could manipulate input parameters beyond authorized boundaries. The overall exposure is determined by the privilege scope granted to underlying integration service accounts and tokens.
Mitigation
To reduce the risk associated with this flaw:
1. Restrict template access: Limit permissions to execute Scaffolder templates to trusted users by configuring role-based access control (RBAC) policies in Red Hat Developer Hub or Ansible Automation Platform.
2. Enforce least privilege on integration credentials: Audit and restrict source control provider tokens (such as GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket credentials) to the minimum necessary repository scopes and permissions required for legitimate template actions.
Caveats: Limiting integration credential permissions may cause templates that require administrative or elevated privileges to fail. Modifying credential secrets or configuration files within the deployment environment will require restarting the application pods for the new settings to take effect.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Technical Impact: Bypass Protection Mechanism; Gain Privileges or Assume Identity; Varies by Context
Attackers can bypass the security decision to access whatever is being protected. The consequences will depend on the associated functionality, but they can range from granting additional privileges to untrusted users to bypassing important security checks. Ultimately, this weakness may lead to exposure or modification of sensitive data, system crash, or execution of arbitrary code.
