CVE-2026-106460
Description
A flaw was found in the @backstage/plugin-auth-node package. This vulnerability allows an authenticated attacker to achieve privilege escalation by assuming another user's catalog identity and gaining their access permissions. The issue occurs because the component does not consistently enforce negative email verification statuses during Open Authorization (OAuth) profile normalization. In deployments configured to resolve catalog identities using profile email addresses, an attacker capable of providing an unverified email address can hijack another user's account.
Statement
Red Hat rates this flaw as Moderate severity because successful exploitation requires significant prerequisites, specifically an authenticated identity provider account and an ability to assign arbitrary unconfirmed email addresses. In deployments running Red Hat Developer Hub or Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform portal components, identity impersonation only occurs if sign-in resolution is explicitly configured to trust unverified profile email claims to match catalog entities. Because standard deployments require legitimate identity provider access and specific catalog mapping configurations, exposure is limited compared to unauthenticated remote access vulnerabilities.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
