CVE-2026-104182
Description
A flaw was found in stream-json. A local attacker can cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by providing JSON with Comments (JSONC) input containing large comments split across multiple small chunks. The parser repeatedly rescans accumulated comment data from the beginning for each chunk, leading to excessive CPU consumption and stalling the application event loop.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity for Red Hat products because triggering the denial of service requires processing untrusted JSON with Comments (JSONC) documents, which typically originate from locally controlled user configuration rather than remote network input. Additionally, standard JSON parsing routines remain unaffected, restricting the algorithmic complexity flaw exclusively to specialized JSONC streams. In environments where inputs are restricted to trusted local files, the risk of an unauthenticated resource exhaustion attack is minimal.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
