CVE-2026-104062
Description
A flaw was found in Scribus. This flaw allows an attacker to achieve arbitrary code execution or cause a denial of service (DoS) by convincing a user to open or import a specially crafted PICT image file. The issue occurs due to improper boundary checks in the PICT image loader and import plugin, causing heap memory corruption when processing manipulated image line dimensions.
Statement
A heap buffer overflow flaw was found in Scribus's PICT image loader and import plugin. An attacker can craft a PICT file whose bytesPerLine exceeds the QImage scanline size; opening or importing such a file corrupts heap memory, crashing Scribus and potentially allowing arbitrary code execution as the user. The issue is fixed in Scribus 1.6.7 (1.6.x line) and 1.7.4 (1.7.x line), which clamp copies to the scanline size and add bounds-checked pixel loops.
Mitigation
Avoid opening or importing PICT image files from untrusted sources until an updated Scribus package (1.6.7 on the 1.6.x line, 1.7.4 on the 1.7.x line) is installed.
Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Integrity
Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
Write operations could cause memory corruption. In some cases, an adversary can modify control data such as return addresses in order to execute unexpected code.
Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart
Attempting to access out-of-range, invalid, or unauthorized memory could cause the product to crash.
Other
Technical Impact: Unexpected State
Subsequent write operations can produce undefined or unexpected results.
