CVE-2026-103484

Description

A flaw was found in pgvector. An authenticated database user can trigger an out-of-bounds write during an Inverted File Flat (IVFFlat) index build operation. This vulnerability may allow the attacker to achieve arbitrary code execution or cause a crash resulting in a denial of service on the database server.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as an Important severity issue because an authenticated database user with permissions to build vector indexes can trigger memory corruption within the PostgreSQL server process, potentially enabling arbitrary code execution. While exploiting the memory corruption allows execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the postgres service account, the impact is bounded to authenticated database accounts that have rights to create tables and indexes. Deployments where untrusted clients cannot create database objects or where the optional pgvector extension is not enabled are not exposed to this risk.

Mitigation

Restrict schema creation permissions to prevent untrusted database accounts from building indexes, or remove the optional pgvector package if vector indexing is not needed.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Write operations could cause memory corruption. In some cases, an adversary can modify control data such as return addresses in order to execute unexpected code.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

Attempting to access out-of-range, invalid, or unauthorized memory could cause the product to crash.

Other

Technical Impact: Unexpected State

Subsequent write operations can produce undefined or unexpected results.
