CVE-2026-100721
Description
A flaw was found in vm2. An attacker running untrusted guest code inside the sandbox can escape isolation and achieve arbitrary code execution on the underlying host system. When an application configures a custom external module resolver, vm2 fails to enforce strict file path boundaries when validating permitted module directories. Consequently, guest code can load unauthorized host files that share a path prefix with an approved module, allowing unvetted code to execute directly in the host environment.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated Critical because an unauthenticated remote attacker can escape sandbox isolation to execute arbitrary code in the host process context, leading to full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Exploitation requires specific architectural preconditions where an application embeds NodeVM configured with host-context execution and a custom external module resolver. Red Hat Developer Hub does not expose this specific sandbox implementation in its configuration so it is not affected.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
