CVE-2026-100692

Description

A flaw was found in Hugo. This vulnerability enables information disclosure when building a site that includes a crafted theme or vendored module. Because Hugo fails to properly restrict symbolic links (symlinks) at mount roots, links pointing to directories outside the project directory are traversed. Consequently, unauthorized files from the host system can be read during site generation and published into the public output directory.

Statement

Red Hat Product Security rates this flaw Moderate. A Hugo build that incorporates an untrusted checked-in theme or vendored module with a symlinked mount root could publish local files readable by the builder. Historical Hummingbird Hugo builds used vulnerable versions; the current package contains the fix. Confirmed GitOps, OpenStack, Korrel8r, and Hummingbird Grafana affects lack the vulnerable version or build path. RHEL and rhivos Grafana remain conservatively affected but are deferred at this severity pending direct downstream build verification. Any residual risk requires running the affected Hugo site-generation path with untrusted local content.

Mitigation

Inspect checked-in themes and vendored modules for symlinks at mount roots before building. Build untrusted content in an isolated environment without access to sensitive host files.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Confidentiality,Integrity,Access Control

Technical Impact: Read Files or Directories; Modify Files or Directories; Bypass Protection Mechanism

An attacker may be able to traverse the file system to unintended locations and read or overwrite the contents of unexpected files. If the files are used for a security mechanism then an attacker may be able to bypass the mechanism.

Other

Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Windows simple shortcuts, sometimes referred to as soft links, can be exploited remotely since a ".LNK" file can be uploaded like a normal file. This can enable remote execution.
