CVE-2026-100407

Description

A flaw was found in Git's Windows credential helper. When storing credentials that contain both a password and an OAuth refresh token, an incorrect buffer calculation leads to an out-of-bounds memory write. This issue can cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by crashing the credential helper process, and may cause Git to falsely report successful credential storage without saving the OAuth credential.

Statement

This vulnerability is classified as having a Moderate impact because it is restricted to local execution and results in a denial of service without exposing sensitive data or granting elevated privileges. Red Hat Enterprise Linux and containerized distributions do not package or run the Windows-specific credential helper containing this flaw. Consequently, supported Red Hat platforms are not exposed to this issue.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Write operations could cause memory corruption. In some cases, an adversary can modify control data such as return addresses in order to execute unexpected code.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

Attempting to access out-of-range, invalid, or unauthorized memory could cause the product to crash.

Other

Technical Impact: Unexpected State

Subsequent write operations can produce undefined or unexpected results.
